Last weekend I was able to visit Virginia and do what I love most-explore! On Saturday, I ventured across the Chesapeake Bay from Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore.
If you’re looking for a day trip, or even a weekend away, the Eastern Shore has so many fun places to explore. I’ve listed my visits with insights and photos to hopefully inspire your next adventure!
Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel:
To get from Virginia Beach to Northampton, you must cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. This truly is the first part of the adventure! The bridge-tunnel is 23 miles long and is one of only ten bridge-tunnel structures in the world, super cool! There is a visitor center, restaurant and a look out area before you enter into the first tunnel when traveling from Virginia Beach.
The toll to cross each way is $13. If you’re committed to crossing, you might as well make it a day trip and explore the peninsula.
Kiptopeke State Park:
Kiptopeke State Park is not too far inland after crossing the bridge from Virginia Beach. Although it’s small, Kiptopeke offers camping, hiking trails, wildlife habitat and fishing docks. The State Park is sleepy this time of year, but this place and its beautiful beach will fill up fast this spring/summer.
To me, Cape Charles emanates the quintessential east coast beach town. The town has an old main street with art galleries, ice cream shops and a cinema. Cape Charles still serves as a harbor for railway barges, so you will always find train cars near by. The perfect photo-op if you ask me!
We stopped at Chatham Vineyard for lunch and wine tasting. This is one of the only vineyards on the peninsula and when we arrived, the tasting room was full. Chatham has a small town atmosphere that will have you feeling right at home the moment you arrive. We weren’t able to leave without purchasing a bottle of their Vintner’s Blend.
